Do you think I should re-pierce my ear?

OK, experts. I'm a guy, so you gotta help me. Twelve years ago, my left ear was pierced. It was our anniversary. My wife and I bought a pair of diamond studs-- one for her and one for me. My hole is, basically, in the center of my earlobe. While the stud looks OK, sometimes I'll wear a hoop, but my wife says that doesn't look right because she thinks that the hole is too high. She says it should be about 3/4 down the earlobe. What is the proper placement? If I re-pierce it, what will happen to the old hole? Will it just close up? Will it leave a scar?
